A large crowd gathered on Wednesday at noon in the stands behind the Márton Áron High School in Miercurea Ciuc, where the teams were welcomed by an almost full house. Our head coach, Goran Kopunovic, fielded a competitive lineup, with six players in the starting eleven already having gained experience at senior level in Liga 2 or the Superliga. The visitors also arrived with a strong squad, including several players from their senior team competing in the third division.
The first half was a hard-fought one but produced few scoring opportunities. FK’s first real chance came in the 37th minute, when Szabolcs Nyitra cleverly won a penalty. He stepped up to take it himself, but his shot – neither very powerful nor particularly well placed – was saved by Minea. The second half started better for the visitors: in the 48th minute, Constantinescu placed the ball into the far top corner from around 14 meters after a cut-back pass, making it 0–1. We pushed for an equaliser but could not create truly dangerous chances; apart from a couple of headers on target that lacked power, we rarely threatened the goal. In the 73rd minute, a long-range free kick taken low by Barnea and slightly deflected found its way into our net, leaving us with no way back. After reaching the semi-finals last year, this season we had to settle for a place among the best eight teams.
