FK Csíkszereda suffered a defeat in their first preparatory match in Austria against Debrecen, but based on the game, they might have deserved the victory.
In the scorching heat, FK Csíkszereda's first preparatory match in the Austrian training camp was held at the stadium in Sankt Leonhard am Forst, a village with about three thousand inhabitants in Lower Austria. The location, more than two hours away from the much more pleasant Mönichkirchen, attracted many locals who were curious about the clash between the Superliga newcomer FK Csíkszereda and Dzsudzsák Balázs' Debrecen. In the intense heat, many Austrian beers and spritzes were consumed.
At the beginning of the match, the team from Hajdúság surprised FK Csíkszereda's new signing, Ferenczi János, with a memento, as he had strengthened the first team of the railway club for about a decade and a half. However, in this match, he was already part of FK Csíkszereda's starting lineup, just like the recently joined Szalay Szabolcs and Végh Bence, while Szabó Bálint, who joined the team on Tuesday, played in the second half.
The match was almost entirely dominated by the team from Székelyland, with Anderson and Babati missing several clear chances in the first fifteen minutes. Furthermore, the Brazilian's shot hit the crossbar once. The Debrecen team, who arrived at the same time as our team for their Austrian training camp, mostly focused on defense, and didn't get into any goal-scoring positions. By the end of the first thirty minutes, they had already made their first six substitutions. At the end of the first half, Szalay and again Anderson created danger, and then during the break, Ilyés Róbert completely replaced the starting lineup.
The second half also started with FK's chances, with Gergely and Szondi having headers saved by Debrecen's defense. Szabó made a great pass to Gergely in the 51st minute, but the young forward shot wide from point-blank range. Then, as sometimes happens, the team with fewer chances scored a goal. Silue's close-range shot was first saved for a corner, but the defender, blinded by the sun, couldn't clear the cross, and Debrecen's striker didn't miss the second chance: 0-1.
The pattern of the game didn’t change much after that. The chances were created by Gergely, Jebari, and Torvund for FK, while on the other side, in the 81st minute, the Austrian referee awarded a penalty for a pull on Kaye at the edge of the box, which Nwachukwu converted. However, Karácsony, who replaced Pap in the 66th minute, saved the penalty. We deserved the goal, and the boys felt this too, but unfortunately, only another shot hitting the crossbar came from Bödő.
Head coach Ilyés Róbert was satisfied with his players' work ethic at the end of the match. "Especially in the first half, we controlled the game more, we had our chances, which unfortunately we couldn't capitalize on, and football is played for goals. Everyone got 45 minutes, I’m glad we were able to play an energetic match against a good team, we were able to dictate a good pace, but I’m a bit disappointed with the result," said the head coach.
Karácsony Márk, who saved the penalty, might have been slightly more satisfied: "The best feeling for a goalkeeper is saving a penalty, luckily I managed to do that, but we're not happy with the defeat. It was clear that we were tired, as we had four tough training sessions in the first two days," said the goalkeeper.
"We wanted to win, no doubt, as we’re preparing for the first league, which has a different pace compared to what we've experienced in the second division. We’ve been training hard, and it showed in the boys, but even so, I think we put in the work expected by the coach. The result could have been different, we had chances in both the first and second halves. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal, but that's part of football, we move on, we have two more matches here, and then we’ll prepare for the first league match," said Torvund Alexander.
