A historic clash awaits our Superliga team on Sunday evening: for the first time we will host the reigning champions, FCSB Bucharest. We will step onto the pitch in front of a sold-out stadium, with only one goal – securing our very first Superliga victory.
This is the first ever official match between FK Csíkszereda and the most popular club in Romanian football, FCSB Bucharest. Whether it is the club with the greatest tradition, whether it holds the most league titles or not, is not our concern here. As is well known, a court ruled that the current club, referred to by four letters, cannot use the name Steaua and, at present, cannot claim the titles won by the army team before 1998, though there is still no final decision on this matter.
Sunday evening’s clash is the derby of the 9th round of the Superliga and will take place at the municipal stadium in front of a full house and great interest. Our fans quickly snapped up all available tickets, so once again, with the backing of our own supporters and the advantage of playing at home, we will try to claim our first Superliga victory – this time against the champions.
For FCSB, however, the start of the 2025–2026 season has brought serious challenges. After eight rounds, the capital side sits only in 13th place, with just one win, three draws and four defeats – a rather poor record for last season’s champion. Their European campaign has also been below expectations: they were knocked out as early as the second qualifying round of the Champions League by FK Shkëndija (North Macedonia), and after two more qualifying rounds they eventually reached the Europa League group stage.
This match is special also because it was not originally supposed to take place in Miercurea Ciuc. Following an agreement between the clubs, a change of venue was made, meaning the 9th round fixture will be played on Sunday at our home ground, while the return leg will take place in Bucharest.
We wish the game to be played, both on and off the pitch, in the spirit of sportsmanship, fair play and mutual respect. We expect the referees, our opponents and the visiting fans from Bucharest to approach the match fairly so that we can all enjoy the love of football together.
Our team returns to Superliga action after a two-week break due to international matches. Róbert Ilyés’s players used this time to regain fitness, integrate new signings and further polish their game. The boys are hungry for victory and determined to give everything to succeed even against the reigning champions.
At the pre-match press conference, Róbert Ilyés said he feels his players have now adapted to the rhythm of the Superliga: “Lately we have improved our game, but now we face a very strong team and we will have to focus twice as much as usual. From what I have seen this week, the boys trained well and with concentration, everyone gave their best, so I have high hopes for Sunday’s match.”
Also present at the press conference were Bálint Szabó and one of our newest signings, Croatian Maks Čelić. In the video above, you can hear their thoughts about the clash with FCSB.
The match, which kicks off at 21:00, will be broadcast live on Digisport 1 and Prima Sport 1.
